Ode to the Brain! by Symphony of Science

[Robert Winston]
It’s amazing to consider that I’m holding in my hands The place where someone once felt, thought, and loved For centuries, scientists have been battling to understand What this unappealing object is all about [Vilayanur Ramachandran]
Here is this mass of jelly you can hold in the palm of your hand And it can contemplate the vastness of interstellar space [Carl Sagan]
The brain has evolved from the inside out Its structure reflects all the stages through which it has passed [Jill Bolte Taylor]
Information in the form of energy streams in simultaneously Through all of our sensory systems And then it explodes into this enormous collage Of what this present moment looks like What it feels like, and what it sounds like It explodes into this enormous collage And in this moment we are perfect We are whole and we are beautiful [Robert Winston]
It appears rather gruesome Wrinkled like a walnut, and with the consistency of mushroom [Carl Sagan]
What we know is encoded in cells called neurons And there are something like a hundred trillion neural connections This intricate and marvelous network of neurons has been called An enchanted loom The neurons store sounds too, and snatches of music Whole orchestras play inside our heads 20 million volumes worth of information Is inside the heads of every one of us The brain is a very big place in a very small space [Jill Bolte Taylor]
Information in the form of energy streams in simultaneously Through all of our sensory systems And then it explodes into this enormous collage Of what this present moment looks like What it feels like, and what it sounds like [Carl Sagan]
No longer at the mercy of the reptile brain, we can change ourselves Think of the possibilities [Bill Nye]
Think of your brain as a newspaper Think of all the information it can store But it doesn’t take up too much room because it’s folded [Oliver Sacks]
We see with the eyes, but we see with the brain as well And seeing with the brain is often called imagination [various] [Jill Bolte Taylor]
And then it explodes into this enormous collage And in this moment we are perfect We are whole and we are beautiful [Robert Winston]
It is the most mysterious part of the human body And yet it dominates the way we live our adult lives It is the brain.

  1. I was shown this in like 3rd grade, and I remembered that one line, “and then it explodes into this enormous collage” and never forgot it.

AND IN THIS MOMENT WE ARE PERFECT

  2. "Information in the form of energy streams in simultaneously through all of our sensory systems, and then it explodes into this enormous collage of what this present moment looks like, what it feels like, and what it sounds like. And in this moment, we are perfect, we are whole, and we are beautiful." Best quote in the song.

  3. Really great song but the stuff from Carl Sagan and Jill Bolte Taylor are so full of bullshit when you actually research what they're saying. This makes a great song but it's the least educational of all the scientific songs on this channel.

  4. Picture this: "The brain is the most important organ in the human body." That is your brain telling you that. Is it true, or is it biased?

  5. My Son is Autistic…. This is his brain x 1000…. That being said, I’ll excuse his next meltdown—It’s completely understandable.

  6. I remember my science teacher showed my class this song in 6th grade. I am now a freshman in college and I have finally found it. Somehow it’s managed to stick with me ever since then. It’s crazy what the brain can do.

  7. Well, my brain must have a thing for the wrong type of women for me or is my brain dominated by another organ.

  8. its not about how much the brain can store >>> its how you interpret and connect every bit of information … and that the difference between us Humans…

  9. I love the Symphony of Science

But it's frustrating that the "reptile brain" myth had to be integrated into this

  10. One of the most beautiful things I’ve heard. “And it explodes in this enormous collage!!!… and in this moment… we’re perfect.” – no love, YOU are perfect. You weired American science lady

  11. "And it can contemplate the vastness of interstellar space." That hit me like a truck. We know more about space and how it operates than we do our own brains. Stuff like that further cements my belief that we are meant to explore the stars.

  12. Most brains never contemplate the vastness of interstellar space. Source: all the third world immigrants I know who believe Adam and Eve were the first humans, and that earth was created some thousand year ago.

  13. The mind is such a complex being. It has such depth in grey matter. It is a biological entity while being a working being . Made of muscles and veins. It can analyse everything that exist in the world and beyond !

  14. This is my very favorite of the Symphony of Science productions. But I do wonder… Bill Nye says to think of our brains "like a newspaper". Newspapers are full of ads! Speaking of ads… when Carl Sagan says our brains have "20 million volumes of information", what information? Copies of "Cosmos"? The earth is Flat, we are all doomed! Praise "Bob" This is heresy!

  15. It is the most mysterious part of the human body. And yet it dominates the way we live our adult lives.

    It is the moustache.

  16. The scientific way disseminating facts of universe, All legendary scientists sung in such a way more simple, very impressive, and lot of information, My sincere wishes & appreciation to all who involved in… SYMPHONY OF SCIENCE..

  17. We need an Ode to the mitochondria, the reason eukaryote cells thrive and sustain most of life in Earth through its electron transport chain.

  19. I wonder, what will happen when we discover the role of quantum mechanics in consciousness and functions of brain?
Loved it by the way 🙂

  20. A want the man of my life to kiss me while this plays in the background and we're in space, maybe in some other solar system/galaxy.

  21. I would LOVE to see a song dedicated to Oliver Sacks. Of course, Melodysheep should focus on what they want to do, first and foremost. But his part in this song was incredible.

  22. Oh my god this just popped up on my recommend and I haven’t seen this since 8th grade and I was infatuated with it! I still love it. The brain is so amazing.
