If you are a Christian dealing with anxiety or depression… WATCH THIS VIDEO! ep 22

Do you or somebody you know deal with
anxiety and depression? We know just, because you go to church it doesn’t mean
that stuff doesn’t come at you. Today on Daily Renewal this is the
subject that we want to cover. Hello everybody this is pastor Lyle and
welcome to Daily Renewal question for you: Do you know anybody that goes to
church that suffers with depression or anxiety? You know one of the things that
absolutely boggles my mind is the fact that I was talking with somebody who’s a
leadership of a church in my city and he mentioned to me, how he couldn’t
believe how many people in his congregation were on prescription drugs.
Now they have a little bit of an older congregation, but he said he figured that
there was easily over 75% of the people in his church, that we’re on some kind of
prescription medication. Well let’s take a look at Proverbs again today, and
again in our reading the Proverbs the past couple days there’s been a theme
that keeps popping up and it’s the fact that we have a Father in heaven that
loves us, and as a Father He wants to help us just like an earthly father
wants to help his own child. Well that all orchestrated with God. God wants
when He looks at us we are His children and like a loving Father He wants to help us.
And with that He’s been talking about instructing asked us the past couple
days, keeping our eyes and our ears and our attention to His Words, because He
knows that in that, that’s going to ultimately help us. So we’re gonna look
at Proverbs keeping that in mind looking at Proverbs 12 today and the verse that
really stuck out to me was this verse 25 and it says this it says “Anxiety in the
heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. Now as I
mentioned to you I don’t think the statistics that I had just mentioned to
you are that far off, and a lot of places in churches across North America
and I just I feel like there is a prescription that I want to give today
and, but before I do I want to give a little bit of a background of something
that the Lord showed me a few years ago; and I don’t often use books, but this is
a book that I read quite a few years ago by George Barna called
Think like Jesus, and I’m bringing this into play more about that, because
of the statistics now this was in 2003 when this was written. Now he compiled
what would have been looked at as does North America or does the US in
particular which is not much different than Canada, in fact Canada’s probably
lower on the scale in a bad way spiritually, but he says he wanted to
look at if American Christians Evangelical Christians had a Biblical
worldview and so in one part of the book he says this: But your view of
life is not based solely on your perception of moral absolutes religious
beliefs religious beliefs also play a central role in people’s understanding
and response to life. If we want to know whether people think like Jesus we must
examine their core spiritual beliefs too. For years we have used a standard
battery of 6 questions that begin to reveal people’s adoption of central
Biblical principles specifically we examine the following beliefs.
#1) God is the all-knowing all-powerful creator of the universe who still rules
that universe today. #2) When Jesus was on earth He lived a sinless life. #3) Satan is not just a symbol
of evil, but is a real living entity. #4) A person cannot earn his or
her salvation by being good or doing good things for other people, that
salvation is the free gift of God. #5) Every person who believes in Jesus
Christ has a personal responsibility to share his or her faith
in Him with other people who believe differently. And the last one #6) The Bible
is totally accurate in all that it teaches. These 6 statements are of
course an incomplete inventory of a person’s belief system. There are
many additional elements that we would ideally include in a full profile of
someone spiritual perspective. To more completely think like Jesus. We would
have to consider views on worship, love, obedience, stewardship, service to the
needy, accountability, forgiveness and so forth. Using even this limited scope of
indicators however we find something very disturbing. Let’s say we define a
Biblical worldview as one in which a person believes that the Bible is the
moral standard, believes that the absolute moral truths exist, and are
conveyed through the Bible, and the person possesses an appropriate point of
view regarding each of the six belief statements listed above. By that
definition and keep in mind Barna is a Credited Statistician Barna
Research Group I believe it’s called. Since by that definition of these six
questions, we discovered that only 9% of born-again adults have a biblical
worldview. Another 6% believe in absolute moral
truth and that the Bible is the repository of that truth, but they do not
hold appropriate views on the six theological statements. And of course the
most disturbing finding in all is that 85% of American born again
adults do not possess either the foundation or the beliefs to qualify as
a Biblical worldview. Let me restate this in a different form: 91% of all
born-again adults do not have a biblical worldview. 98% of all born-again
teenagers do not have a biblical worldview. If your heart did not just
drop to the floor you don’t understand the implications of these chilling facts.
When people wonder why the Christian Church is losing influence in American
Society which 7 out of 10 American adults currently contend the reason is
that so very few think like Jesus. Let’s put this in perspective as of 2003. The
United States has about two hundred and ten million adults, about 175 million of
them claim to be Christians, about 80 million are born-again Christians,
roughly seven million have a biblical worldview. This is just 1 out of every 30
adults in this nation. God does not need a majority to get His will
accomplished in our world, but these figures give new meaning to the Biblical
description of True Believers as the remnant. Now let me tell you, I meet at
coffee shops all over my city, and it amazes me how many people I have
conversations with that go to multiple churches around my city. Whose lives they
come to me because I’m a pastor, and I’m gentle with them, but they talked to me
about the problems in their lives that they’re having, and it never ceases to
amaze me how quick they are to tell me about the things they believe. Some of
them will tell me how amazing their church is; for one I asked him plain out
well why aren’t you talking to your own pastor about these things. Apparently he
didn’t feel safe doing that, that’s another story for another day I guess;
but I talked to these people and a lot of them they’ll talk about the Bible and
they’ll paraphrase portions of Scripture and very often they’re not even close to
being Biblically accurate it. And these are people that if you ask them I guarantee
most of them would say they’re strong Christians. The problem we have today and
the reason why we have some of this statistics we do about people
having anxiety within the church has a lot to do with the fact they don’t have
a good foundational; good foundational start in their Christian walk. Some of
the people I’m talking about someone of them have been in church 40-50 years.
Now I’m gonna submit to you this It’s not all their fault, part of the
reason is the fact that a lot of time the church has allowed the culture to
seep into the point or the Word of God has hardly any effect anymore.
I’m for the local church part of the reason why I even do what I
do and why I’m doing this is, because I’m so heartbroken on the fact that I meet
so many believers that are suffering from some of the very thing, the same
things that we just read about. We have to be people that are seeking Jesus; not
just seeking a church that will run the programs that my kids will enjoy, that
will have the kind of worship team that sings the music that I want. A lot of
times when we choose a church we choose it based on our own convenience and our
own desires. A lot of the churches today we need to be very careful. It’s a lot
like, I’ll give you an example some of you I’ve heard people say that they have
a problem with the pharmaceutical industry. Well I do too I don’t like the
fact that a lot of times when you go to a doctor they, not all doctors,
but a lot of time they’ll give you a prescription and what’s the prescription
for? the prescription isn’t to get you better often what is it it’s to reduce
the pain. You know and some of these prescriptions you look at a commercial
on TV and I’ll give you a if you just take this it’ll take away the symptoms
of this, and then it’s got a disclaimer on the bottom for about ten other things
that will pop up and be problems for just so you can go in and get another
prescription for those things. You know a lot of times the church is like modern
medicine, we come into the church and for us as pastors if we’re not careful we’re
handed no prescriptions to take care of people’s pain here on earth; when really
it’s just a it’s something that really doesn’t have eternal benefits. A lot of
the preaching today is to take away pain on earth, to make you feel comfortable
here so that you can have your best life now. Well here’s a news flash if me as a
pastor, or if I was a pastor I’m telling you how to have your best life now I’ve
totally missed it, because if your best life is now, I guess you’re not gonna
spend eternity with God, because that’s where our best life will. In fact
there’s many places in Scripture in John 16:33 it says “These things I have
spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you
will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” and
Hebrews 5:8 it says that Jesus learned obedience through the things He suffered,
but often when we look at church we’re looking at at the preaching, and we’re
hoping that it can help us somehow get to the point where we’re not
experiencing any form of pain here on earth. Well if you’re getting that kind
of preaching you’re probably getting prescription medication. Well I’m gonna
give you a little bit I’m gonna give you a prescription, but it’s a prescription
that ultimately will bring health to you rather than just a quick fix for here and
now; and it comes in the form of John 1:1 In John 1:1 it says this and I’m
just gonna read it verbatim it says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was Word was God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All
things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In
Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness,
and the darkness did not comprehend it.” And then if we go down to verse 14 it’s
even clearer “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His
glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Well who’s that talking about? The Word was God the same was in the beginning is
Jesus this is talking about Jesus being the Word, and yesterday one of the things
we touched on was in Proverbs 4:20 and I’ll just add to that from 4:20-21 it
says “My son give attention to My words; Incline your ear to my sayings.
Don’t let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; For
they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” My
prescription for you today to have health not just here on earth, but for
eternity is that we have to have our focus on Jesus; we cannot separate His
Words from Him. In other words this right here for the past three sessions God has
been speaking to us about inclining our ears to His Word, keeping it in front of
our eyes, listening to it, if you are facing depression and anxiety I’m gonna
tell you; the Great Physician is who you need to see, and I wouldn’t
recommend anybody’s books. I recommend this Book or these 66 Books
all put together. I’m gonna tell you when I face things, when I face challenges, and
anxiety tries to come in and you know I’ve had times in ministry where
I’ve had really dark times, the best advice I will give you is to get away
from everything, go to a room that’s quiet put down the phone get an actual
Bible that you can read like a book rather than just your phone, because
you’ll be distracted to go to other things probably, and begin to read, pray
ask Him…Lord what’s wrong with me? How do I get through this? If you ask Him, He
will show you in His word, He will bring a peace that passes all understanding,
but far too often what we do as a pastor I used to do this I never understood it,
but often what we did in church is it was it was adjusted so that you would
become dependent on me. You’d come and get your prescription you take your pill
on Sunday, you take your pill on Wednesday you take your pill, and
whenever you came to church, but that was never intended and what God intended,
what God intended is for you to be able to have a lifestyle where you could be
with Him all the time, and I’m not downplaying church we need
church it is one of the places when we go to get fed; but ultimately it’s Jesus
it wants to feed you. So spend some time in His word today. If you’re suffering
with these things, get by yourself pray and ask Him and allow Him to show you
through His Word; you will be absolutely amazed how His Word will come alive to
you, when you spend time with Him in it. Well I pray it up something out of that
today, I know you did and I just want to encourage you to consider to subscribe
